What It Means, and How to Become: A Pilot!
Have you always dreamed of soaring through the skies? There's something magical about piloting an aircraft - the freedom, the perspective, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with it. Whether you're considering flying for personal enjoyment or launching a professional career, becoming a pilot starts with understanding the journey ahead.
The Journey to Your Pilot Certificate
At Safety in Motion Flight Center, we've guided countless individuals through their pilot training journey. Here's what you need to know to get started:
1. Schedule a Consultation: Your journey begins with a simple conversation. Contact our team at Safety in Motion Flight Center to discuss your goals, timeline, and answer any questions you may have. We're with you every step of the way, from your first inquiry to receiving your pilot certificate.
2. Take an Introductory Flight: There's no better way to determine if flying is right for you than experiencing it firsthand. Schedule an introductory flight with one of our certified flight instructors at either our Puyallup, WA or Olympia, WA location. During this flight, you'll actually take the controls and get a taste of what it feels like to fly an aircraft. Our 4-seat training aircraft even allow you to bring friends or family along for the experience (subject to weight restrictions).
3. Begin Your Training Program: Once you've decided to pursue your pilot certificate, we'll help you get started with the necessary paperwork and documentation:
Government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport)
Proof of U.S. citizenship (passport or birth certificate)
Any existing pilot certificates or medical certificates (if applicable)
4. Understand the Investment: Flight training is an investment in your future. The total cost depends on several factors, including:
How frequently you train (more frequent lessons typically mean faster progress and lower overall costs)
Your natural aptitude and study habits
The specific certificate or rating you're pursuing
Use our helpful Cost Calculator to estimate your investment, and remember - we're transparent about all costs involved in your training.
5. Complete Your Training: Training consists of both ground school (learning the theory and knowledge) and flight lessons (developing practical skills). Your dedicated flight instructor will create a personalized schedule that works for you. Most flight lessons take about 2 hours from arrival to departure. Students who train 4-5 days per week typically complete their Private Pilot certificate in approximately 3 months, while those who train 2-3 days per week usually finish in 6-9 months.
6. Pass Your Tests: To earn your pilot certificate, you'll need to pass both an FAA written knowledge exam and a practical flight exam (checkride). As an FAA-approved testing facility, Safety in Motion Flight Center can administer your written exam right on-site.
What Comes Next?
Once you've earned your Private Pilot certificate, the sky truly becomes the limit! You might choose to continue your training with advanced ratings and certificates:
Instrument Rating: Fly in clouds and challenging weather conditions
Commercial Pilot Certificate: Fly professionally and get paid for your skills
