About Safety In Motion

WHO WE ARE

Safety in Motion Flight Center was founded in July 2010 with the purpose of providing pilots with avionics training in the new GPS Navigator, Glass Cockpit Systems, and Autopilots being used in general aviation. A Redbird FMX Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD) was purchased and used to provide this training. Safety in Motion (SIM) Flight Center grew quickly, with students voicing strong interest in having the flight center provide actual in-flight training as well.

In 2011, training aircraft were purchased to include a 1938 Piper Cub, and the school applied to become a FAA-approved Part 141 flight school. Additionally in 2011, Safety in Motion Flight Center took over management of the Pierce County/Thun Field fuel concession making it a full-service fixed-base operation (FBO).

In 2012, Safety in Motion Flight Center was approved as a Part 141 flight school and at that point had the Redbird FMX AATD, two Cessna 172s, a Cessna 172RG, a Cessna 310, and a Piper Cub.

In 2013, a new Chief Flight Instructor/Director of Operations was hired to focus on the growth of the flight program and expand flight operations. Within 3-years the Flight Center expanded the Part 141 courses to include pilot certificates from Private through Airline Transport Pilot, Instrument and Multi-engine Aircraft Ratings, and all Flight Instructor Certificates and Ratings. During that same time period, the Flight Center added an aircraft maintenance division, became a partner with Green River College, and received approval for providing flight training to veterans utilizing their VA education benefits.

In 2018, Safety in Motion Flight Center expanded its influence to Olympia, Washington to address the need for additional professional fixed-wing flight training programs in the South Puget Sound region. Jorgensen Air Service was purchased and Safety in Motion absorbed the flight training operation. The Flight Center additionally took on management of the Jorgensen FBO corporate and state fueling operations and Part 135 Air Taxi (Charter) operation.

Additionally, in 2018 Port Townsend Air, LLC was purchased adding yet another Cessna 172 to the expanding fleet of aircraft and yet another Part 135 Air Taxi Certificate to the company's management portfolio.

In 2019, Safety in Motion's Flight Training division became a training provider for Horizon/Alaska Airlines' Pilot Development Program, and affiliated with numerous other airlines and charter operations to help provide them with professionally trained and competent pilots. Since the company's beginnings only 11-years ago, it has grown from having 4 staff members, 4 airplanes and just offering basic flight training, to having over 30 employees, 19 aircraft, and a full-array of aviation services all focused on serving the aviation industry in the Pacific Northwest and beyond! Staying true to the company’s founding focus of providing pilots with training with advanced aircraft avionics (radios & navigation) systems, all the aircraft have been upgraded with the state of the art systems.
